"The limits of my language are the limits of my world" -Ludwig Wittgenstein
This quotation really represents the importance and the role that language has in our world. Language is such a general system that needs to be well conveyed and comprehended by populations to fully function as a society. A language is a great tool that dictates the development and the future of a nation as a whole and being limited in terms of language means having a limited society that could face problems due to these limits. A language is an unifying tool that connects us with other in such a vast but yet amazing way.
´´The limits of my language are the limits of my world´´ Ludwig Wittgenstein 1992
First of all, before explaining what this quotation means, i would like to mention the Holy Bible as a starting point, because on it I could find a good example. In Genesis 11 from 1 to 9 we find that God decided to confuse the language of the whole world in order to stop building a tower to heaven, nobody could continue it, because it was impossible to communicate with each other due to the fact that all the people that were there, began to speak different languages, in this chapter I consider that language is seen as a blessing rather than a punishment, through languages we have the opportunity to explore and go beyond what surrond us. Wittgenstein came to the conclusion that we are limited to what we can verbally understand, that means that the act of speaking our mother tongue limits our boundary, since we will immersed in the same environment that enwreath us, without taking advantage of the other qualities that the world offers us.
"A different language is a different vision of life". -Federico Fellini.
The first thing that comes to my mind when I read that phrase is what I have been listening to since I started to study this amazing career, and that is "when we are lerning a new language, we are not just learning that language, we are also acquiring the culture through that language". I consider that this new language is giving us the opportunity to acquire sociolinguistic competences, and this is basically for me having the opportunity to see further than just words, this is having opportunity to analyze how people think, hoe people live and how people behave.
“The limits of my language mean the limits of my world” -Ludwig Wittgenstein (1992)
The majority of people who do not learn an L2 tend usually not to know much about their mother tongue, therefore this can be a limiting when it comes to express themselves accurately or be understood. For me, this quote makes reference to the idea of how limited your understanding of the world may be depending on how limited your knowledge of your language is.
Besides, this phrase is also about how learning another language can help you expand the limits of your world, of your reality since learning a new language is not only about acquiring vocabulary, grammatical structures or an accurate pronunciation. Learning a new language is about acknowledging that people are different and that each one has distinct beliefs, cultures, and opinions. Along these lines, it can be said that when learning a second language, it is important to be open-minded, to not judge, and to be aware of the fact that not everyone sees the world in the same way. Language must be a means to communicate, to break barriers, do not let it become an obstacle.
The limits of my language mean the limits of my world Ludwig Wittgenstein (26 April 1889-29 April 1992) Based on this quotation, I would like to say the limits of my language. It is study my own language and I need to learn another foreign language in order to know what the limits of my world. It is necessary to break some barriers by learning one language for a better communication, to exchange knowledge, culture, ideas. On the other hand, the importance of learning a new language, especially English , help me to connect with foreigners for many reasons such as business or international issues, economic, political problems that touch everyone, in spite of learning one foreign languages a cultural process because of languages always carry out historical people and traditions. I can come to the conclusion which person who can speak any languages will break barriers in order to build a better world, learning any languages is very important to overcome the limits of our own world.
“A different language is a different vision of life” -Federico Fellini.
As we grow up, we are raised with determined thoughts, attitudes, aptitudes and also a determined vision of life. All those aspects could have been shaped by our parents or can also be learned by ourselves all throughout our life. As long as we start to study and learn a little bit more about life itself, we realize that there are so many things more to learn about and discover. Then, when a new language comes to field, we start to see our life differently, due to a language is not just the language but the country where it comes from, the countries where it is spoken, all the customs and ways to behave behind it. In brief, a completely new world. As time passes, we dive in deep in this new language or world, and we end up having new conceptions and expectations about life.
“A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE IS A DIFFERENT VISION OF LIFE” -FEDERICO FELLINI To understand this quotation, we should make the following questions: Why is important to learn a new language? What are the benefits of learning a second language? When we learn a second language, we learn more than grammar and words. To learn a new language can help us to understand new ways to talk, express and to see the world. Therefore, to talk a second language is the opportunity to know a new culture, new ways of life and other thoughts. Taking this into account, we can say that to learn a new language allows us to comprehend another vision of the world and our reality. Based on my experience, before I started studying this beautiful career, I kept in mind the traditions and thoughts that Sincelejo and its people taught me about the life. But, when I started to know and interact with people from different countries, I had the opportunity to change some ideas that I had about the reality and the world, I could understand differences and appreciate them. Also, I could see the world in a different way.
Language shapes the way we think, and determines what we can think about. – Benjamin Lee Whorf (1964)
According to Benjamin Lee Whorf and his theory of linguistic relativity, language shapes the way we think, and determines what we think about. He believed that depending on the language we speak we see the world differently. I disagree with his quotation, I think is that there is more involvement than just language and thought; there is also culture. Your culture, traditions, lifestyle, habits, etc., that you pick up from people with whom you live and interact, shapes your way of thinking and also shapes the way you talk. A clear example of this is when we learn a second language very different from our mother tongue and we get so involved in the language that we even begin using some expressions of the culture from which we are learning; that does not mean that we are going to change our way of thinking immediately, rather it gives us a broad knowledge about culture and to appreciate and to know other new ways of life.
A different language is a different vision of life- Federico Fellini.
There are people who do not have interest in other languages and cultures; they inclose themselves in their own worlds so they never have the chance to change their language perception. I consider that the fact that we are learning other languages, it riches our knowledge about other aspects of language, and it changes the way we see the life, tumbling paradigms about cultures. It expands our minds.
The limits of my language mean the limits of my World (Ludwig Wittgenstein)
When we see the Word language, then we focus on the need to communicate something. Therefore, in My own view, the author refers to the ability of conveying a message in order to express our thoughts, ideas & opinions; those ones that are límites se, for that reason, When we cannot encode a message, then we have limits. This happens because of the lack of lexicon and knowledge we have about the language and this make struggle on what we are trying to convey and suddenly our World has ended.
"A different language is a different vision of life" Federico Fellini
I consider that when we know a different language, we can have a wider vision of the world because when we get to know well that we are not the only ones in this planet, we start to be more open-minded and aware that there are so many different people, cultures and costums around us and that allows us to be changing and starting to think about accepting how different a person from other country or culture can be. Life is the most difficult exam. Many people fail because they try to copy others, not realizing that everyone has a different question paper.
Something very difficult is life. In terms of dreams and knowledge we have to past a big numbers of challenges. From the beginning to the future we are strong related with different process. For example since we born, we are passing steps that in most cases made us to cry and also smile. It is like a natural rule. Everybody has to pass difficulties in order to understand life and acquire whatever we want.
"A different language is a different vision of life". Federico Fellini (1992)
One must know that each language stands out the idea that not everybody sees the world in the same way. the amounts of times we immerse in languages different from our mother tongue, we get to experience variations in perspectives. One can feel different speaking in a certain language than another. This is because of what each culture values. If we think deeply about it, we will notice how there are tongues that highlight politeness towards elders in a much greater extent. In this stance, Spanish speakers give more importance to it through the use of "usted" to refer to older people than English speakers do. Therefore, it can be said this supports the idea that every language reflects a unique world view. In conclusion, paradigms of reality differ from one language to another.
"The limits of my language are the limits of my world" Ludwig Wittgenstein 1992
This quotation means that the language is the instrument to make contact with others and with others things and only across the language you explore and know all in your world. If you limit your language you limit your word in a closer world because you won't have any ideas about something if you don't read or manage some topics which are important in you live. In addition, the language create the world and each language are a little different part of it.
“The limits of my language mean the limits of my world” -Ludwig Wittgenstein (1992)
Learn a foreign language is not just about rules, words and phrases, it also include culture, a different way of thinking and a respect for customs and religions. Moreover, if we want to explore, to know and to study the world we live in, it is required to speak more than a language, I think the author of this quote wanted to highlight that and I agree with him, it is important to acquire new languages to discover the world and the cultures that each continent offer.
"A different language is a different vision of life"
Language is the system of communication that belongs to a community, it can be one of the main characteristics of a culture, it stands out the way people express them selves as human beings in order to build new relations. Furthermore, when learning a different language you get inside a new world, you learn the way they talk, the way they behave, also, you become open-minded due to the differences between cultures. Then, you are able to understand better the diversity of the world. Consequently, you start to discover your-self, developing an other way to see your own in new environments.
"Language shapes the way we think and determines what we can think" Benjamin Lee Whorf (1964).
Reflecting on the above statement from Benjamin Lee Whorf, I would say that with the fact the language is the capacity to convey messages and express thoughts, the language I speak and the words I use, will shape a particular way of thinking. I can be using my language in an inappropiate way, that is using words and expressions which simply do not let me think how I can think; negatively and not positively. The more I enrich my language, the more I will express better thoughts, which determines a better way to think. For instance, the way to think changes among people with a poor lexicon and those with a enriched lexicon. Even, this changes the most with dumb people because of their inability to speak, that hinder thoughts to be expressed, and their way of thinking is not clear. People might speak the same language but the speech can be totally distinct, diverse ways to utter words, and that is what makes the difference in the way of thinking.
